A Police Encounter Last Night

My wife and I had an interesting experience with the Pittsburgh police last night that I would like to share with you. We had gone to bed early and around 11:15 the phone rang waking us up. It was the police, who were outside our door, checking with us. They said they had received a 911 call from our house which had hung up before leaving a message. I told them there was no emergency and I had not made the call and they asked if they could come in and talk to me. I said certainly and went downstairs to let them in. In came four police officers: a lieutenant, a Sargent, and two uniforms. I asked him what was the number that had called and they told me and that it was listed at our house number on Negley Avenue. It was not our telephone number and the address they had didn't differentiate between North Negley or South Negley. I told him that since the post office has problems, the call may have come from South Negley Ave. While they didn't explicitly say anything, I thought the real reason they wanted to come in and talk to us was to make sure that we were okay and no one was in the house threatening us or it was not a domestic situation. It made me feel very comfortable that the police used such procedures and did it in such a tactful manner. After they left I was thinking that the higher taxes we pay to live in the city are probably worth it. All of my encounters with the police the fire department and the EMS have been very positive and I've been struck by the way they have responded and how caring they all seemed. With all the attention the police are getting in the news media, I thought that when they do something very well that should get some publicity also. Today is the last day to take the HPCC Homeowner Survey. During the 2014 Highland Park House Tour many showcase homeowners, neighbors and tour guests voiced an interest to learn from each other and trusted experts how to best care for their homes inside and out. Based on this feedback and desire to connect with other residents the HPCC is sponsoring a FREE event to answer questions, connect residents with resources and each other, and educate our community on maintaining a home in our National Residential Historic District. The event is planned for February 2015 with a goal of educating the community at large on home improvements, general home maintenance issues, navigating city processes such as permitting and innovative approaches to enhancing the value of your residence. Free online SAT prep program for Pittsburgh-area students! - Neighbors in Need Scholars (Pgh non-profit)

Attention Local Residents! At Neighbors in Need Scholars we aim to make exceptional SAT prep available for all students through a new generation of test preparation. Our free program combines live instruction via webinars and online content and tools to complement the instructional sessions. The pilot program will begin in January 2015. The initial pilot will run through March in conjunction with the SAT exams. Live webinars will be conducted by Master Tutor Hoon Kim (M.Ed.) of the highly reputable SAT prep company, Pittsburgh Prep. The ultimate goals of our program are 1) helping students obtain their "reach" school, and 2) to improve the possibility of financial aid. We are currently recruiting local area schools and individual students to participate in our pilot program. Old Skis - What to do with them?

I have three pairs of old skis with dated bindings - any advice? I called Willis and they said it won't be worth it to change out the bindings, for that's what I would need to do. I just wanted to see if anyone else has journeyed this path. Also, if it's not worth it - is there an organization, individual, etc, that will take them as a donation vs. sending them to the trash pile? Cheers! Sofia
