Looking for Leaves Eight million tons of leaves went into landfills in 2005. It’s estimated that amount is somewhat less today thanks to the use of composting. [...] Pound for pound, the leaves of most tress contain twice the mineral content of manure. Because they’re a form of organic roughage, they can dramatically improve drainage and aeration of the soil. And they provide the perfect nutrition for beneficial microbes. In short, they make soil come alive. Thank you to the folks who brought leaves to Borland Garden! If you have clean *bagged* leaves (except Black Walnut) or *bagged* grass clippings, consider dropping them at the entrance to the garden. We're located the corner of Beatty and Black Street behind the Obama School. Feel free to walk the garden paths while you're here!

East Liberty Pres. Church seeking musicians

East Liberty Presbyterian Church (116 south Highland Ave.) is looking for musicians for its weekly Wednesday evening Taize service. We are looking for experienced musicians for: keyboard (accompaniment); violin; and oboe. The Taize service is composed of meditative singing as well as scripture and spoken and silent prayer. Each service uses around 9 separate pieces of music which are primarily short refrains sung repeatedly with vocal and instrumental solos performed over the refrain to break up the repetition. Music selections are provided at least one week in advance. Since the rehearsals are brief, each musician is expected to study the music for the week and be prepared to play any parts for his/her particular instrument accurately and confidently. Which solos are played and the sequencing of intros and solos is determined by the director at the rehearsal. Musicians are expected to be present and prepared to play for weekly Wednesday rehearsal and service. 6:30 - 7:00 PM Rehearsal and 7:00 - 8:00 PM Service. Group Lifestyle Balance

PITT Retiree Study offered in East End and other Pittsburgh locations Dr. Elizabeth M. Venditti and her research team from the University of Pittsburgh is offering an opportunity to screen for enrollment in the Pitt Retiree Study. Those who are eligible and interested may join a free 12-week weight management program - called Group Lifestyle Balance. Program goals are to make modest and reasonable changes in eating habits, physical activity and weight and reduce risk factors for Type 2 diabetes. Over 180 retirees (from other groups) have enrolled since 2012 and have lost 6.5% of their baseline weight on average. Many individuals have developed moderately active lifestyle habits (150 minutes per week of walking or similar activities) and report feeling better and more energetic. We are pleased to be able to offer you this program that has been shown to help older adults take greater control of their health, well-being and risk factors for type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The 12 weekly sessions will be held at convenient locations throughout the Pittsburgh area, including the East End. Participants can expect to attend health assessments at 0, 4, 12 and 24 months as part of the follow-up study. These are the study eligibility requirements: Not already diagnosed as having diabetes Aged 65-80 at time of enrollment Overweight or obese, and want to lose about 7% of your bodyweight and become more active, mostly by walking Have one other health risk factor for diabetes, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or family history of diabetes Group Lifestyle Balance will be offered during both the spring and the summer of 2015; screening begins in late 2014. Reminder: Halloween Parade & Bad Weather Contingency

Calling all ghosts and goblins! The Highland Park Community Council’s annual Halloween parade and festivities will take place Saturday, Nov. 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Highland Park. The entire Obama Academy band will be on hand to play as kids parade to the fountain. We will gather at Oak Grove then parade to the fountain, where we will decorate homemade cookies and have snacks.* Volunteers to escort our parade participations and to help decorate cookies are needed. If it is snowing or raining, we will move down to the Rhododendron Shelter, which is at the bottom of the hill leading toward the Highland Park pool. To find Oak Grove, turn right upon reaching the road at the main entrance of the park, pass the road leading to the Farm House. The little clearing with a bench and sign saying “Oak Grove” is just a few more yards. You can’t miss it, but just in case we will have signs or volunteers to point the way.
