Hi, I'm trying to find work for a very responsible, smart, and hard working 14 year old girl. She has experience babysitting and would make a great mothers helper. She also would be a fantastic tutor for elementary school kids given that she is excellent with young kids and a straight A student. She could also help with miscellaneous stuff around the house. [Highland Park] Curb alert messages to the list serv

I have a request to ask to the community, in an effort to decrease the amount of usable things that end up in the trash in the neighborhood. I see a lot of them when walking my dog in the mornings, and I am sure we all have. To begin with, there are many organizations that will take your usable discards and will even come and pick them up, such as Veterans, Goodwill, Off the floor Pittsburgh). Many others will take lots of different items but you have to take them there (Construction Junction, Animal Rescue League). This link describes a few of them (http://pittsburgh.about.com/od/charity/tp/donate.htm) but there are many others that will take clothes, furniture, computers, blankets, etc and it is very easy to do a google search and find them. Even Whole Foods takes old carpets and blankets for pets in shelters. Donating your items will help some people, reduce the amount of trash and save the city some money. It is a win/win situation! In addition, there have been recently quite a few "curb alerts" posted on the list serv. While this is a very nice way to give your neighbours the opportunity to get and use some stuff in nice condition, many times those announcements don't make it to the list before the trash collection comes. Many items that could definitively be used by somebody else end up in the trash. If you have something in decent condition you are going to put on the curb, it will be great if you could submit a message to the list two-three days in advance. Our poor moderator/s are doing a terrific job but they need some time to go over the messages and post them! Thanks a lot neighbors Mayte Sáenz Robles

[Highland Park] Volunteers Needed - Lawrenceville Hospitality House Tour

Hey Neighbors! This event is held over the hill in Lville but I'm hoping to see if any of the great HPers are interested in helping out! I'm acting as Volunteer Coordinator for the Lawrenceville Hospitality House Tour <http://lha15201.org/> and am in need of more volunteers! The event is Sun, Oct 6 from 12pm to 5pm and shifts are either 12pm to 2:30pm or 2:30pm to 5pm. Volunteers get to participate in the house tour for free as well as spend an afternoon hanging out with some cool Lawrenceville residents. Opportunities are as follows: - Docents - stationed at each house on the tour - Registration - handling registration at the main tent in Allegheny Cemetery - Van docents - on the trolleys that are circulating the neighborhood Sign up is located here <http://lha15201.org/vols.html>. Porch furniture to give away: 3 seater metal glider (61.5" wide X 23" deep X 36" high) and matching single glider chair (22.5" wide X 26.5" deep X 36" high). Both pieces are in need of a little sanding and a fresh coat of rustoleum paint to look like new (see third photo below), but perfectly serviceable as they are. AND, the price is right -- FREE!
