Living in Liberty is a non-profit organization working to provide aftercare for those rescued from the commercial sex industry right here in Pittsburgh. [Highland Park] Free Software for Backing up your complete Operating System (PC only)

Simple Overview of OS (Operating System) imaging: Applies to PC only. (NO MAC) Your OS exists on a hard drive partition. Unlike Windows System Restore ( iffy at best ) OS “imaging” captures a full image (snapshot) of the whole hard drive partition which can be restore to the same partition or to a new hard drive in the event that your HDD fails. Images need to be saved on an other partition or an other hard drive. The easiest solution for most users is an external USB hard drive (not to be confused with a little USB stick). Download links are at the bottom after more detailed information. ====================== I just tried a free program that was highly recommended to me and after some testing I think it's really good. “Macrium Reflect” is free open source software. Macrium runs inside of Windows ( XP, 7 and 8 ) and also had a rescue disk builder that will create an ISO that can either be burned to CD or to a USB stick using YUMI ( free open source also ) Macrium alone, can also create rescue media on a CD so YUMI isn’t really necessary, it’s just easier for me to use a USB stick. The initial downloader is clean so don't get freaked out. It will look at what OS you're using and then download the correct application, which you then use to install Macrium Reflect. The installation will also create a file called pe3x64.zip or something similar which is necessary for the install. ====================== General Overview of Macrium: It will create a full image ( snap shot ) of any partition in your PC. It makes sense to just choose your OS partition so that will be the check box to the bottom right of that partition. Save the image on an other partition or an external drive. Ideally keep a running tab of 3 images. Create folder 001 then the next time you image, create 002, then 003 etc. When you're ready for 004 just create that folder and delete 001. I image my OS before any change of consequence. This leaves me a reliable (not like the unreliable Windows System Restore) return path in case something gets messed up. ====================== Download: Macrium Reflect ( the free edition ) Warning about the YUMI download page: Use the blue download link 1/2 way down the page and NOT the one at the top. The one at the top is a downloader that will infest your PC with a bunch of junk. ( I guess they have to make some money some how ) Anyway, the blue link, 1/2 down is clean and will give you a direct download of YUMI(some numbers here).exe YUMI is used to burn the ISO to a USB stick. It runs as a stand alone app and doesn't need to be installed. Download: YUMI ( free open source also ) Here are the instructions for creating the bootable USB rescue. It more than lived up to my expectations and kept my (~800 sq ft) apartment VERY COOL for two months of moderate use before being packed away for the winter.
