[Highland Park] Alert: Assault on Highland @ St. Marie St

Hello Neighbors, Just to let you know about an incident that happened to me tonight. I was coming home from work, walking past the Seminary (N. Highland toward Stanton) and as I was just crossing St. Marie Street a man assaulted me from behind. I first felt a hand or arm across my shoulder, then immediately felt a hand scoop from behind between my legs and grope me. When I realized what was happening, I yelled and started cursing at the top of my lungs, and bolted sideways a bit. He lost his grip and ran off down St. Marie toward Sheridan, crossing back to the side of the Seminary. I didn't see his face, so I have no facial description. I also couldn't tell whether he was black or white, light or dark. He was wearing a black hoodie (hood up, of course), under a black jacket which had a Steelers emblem on the left arm, black pants/jeans, and what looked like black Chuck Taylor sneakers. He had a slender build and he seemed shorter than me (I'm 5'8"). He must've been wearing pants that were too big because he had to hoist them up to run away! He seemed to me to be a teen or young adult. AND I'm assuming this person is a male. This happened at about 10pm tonight. The police at Zone 5 came and took a statement; they're putting out a report. The senior officer said this is probably not a one-time event; this person will most likely do it again. The officers also said there are surveillance cameras at the Seminary and the nursing home across the street, so they will review footage from those cameras to see if they can get anything. When I walk that way at night, I periodically look back to see if anyone is behind me. I did tonight also, except when I got just past the Seminary. So I'm thinking this person was hiding on the Seminary grounds?? Anyway, please be on guard. Thank you. Sincerely, Alycia

[Highland Park] Gardening Question! Raised Bed Soil?

Hello, I'm making two 4x4 raised beds to grow vegetables in, and while I was initially going to use "Mel's Mix" (1/3 peat moss, 1/3 coarse vermiculite, 1/3 mixture of five composts), turns out it's really expensive and hard to find. Thus, I'm wondering if any gardeners in the area who have grown vegetables successfully could recommend a mixture of soil/other materials to use in my raised beds that is easier to find and less expensive? I would like to invite you, your staff and friends to join us. Highland Park Tennis Club (HPTC) Press Release: On May 4th,, 2013, The Highland Park Tennis Club will host its Twelfth Annual Free Tennis Clinic. The clinic is Saturdays only from 9:30am to 11:00am. We provide free instruction and rackets. The clinic run until July 20th, 2013 and culminate with a tennis party for all attendees. The clinic site is the Stanton Tennis Courts at Highland Park, the 6700 of Stanton Avenue, 15206. This past winter, HPTC volunteers conducted USTA 10 & Under format tennis as After School programs. The site used was the Pittsburgh Weil School. We served forty-six urbanchildren from first through fourth grade two evenings per week. Also, we volunteered for the Operation Better Block at the Homewood Y. HPTC was started as a social club, but quickly developed in to a Community Tennis Association under the United States Tennis Association. The club has conducted after school tennis, senior center indoor tennis, and most proudly sponsors a free tennis clinic on Saturday mornings from May to July. At the end of the outdoor tennis season, HPTC donates used balls to local schools to be used as noise dampeners on chairs. HPTC has held fundraisings for events such, Nine-Eleven, Haiti, Sickle Cell, Cancer, but this year at our Annual Survivor Mixed Doubles event the beneficiary of our efforts in the community will go to Cribs for Kids (http://cribsforkids.org/) Hope to see you there. [Highland Park] Tree Care Day Volunteers Reminder

This message was previously posted, but just as a reminder... Dear Neighbors, I am sure you are all itching to get outside and walk and -finally- enjoy spring. Here is your opportunity! We have multiple new trees donated to Highland Park through the Tree Pittsburgh street tree program. While the cost of the trees is donated through the program, the planting and initial maintenance is done by neighborhood volunteers. The Highland Park Tree Tenders are organizing a series of tree care events this spring, and the next one will be on Thursday April 25th, at 6pm. We'll meet at the corner of Stanton and Sheridan, and will be working on the trees along Stanton and Sheridan, removing weeds and dead branches, mulching and in general giving the trees some loving tender care. We'll meet rain or shine! Jake Milofsky, Tree Pittsburgh Stewardship Coordinator will be leading the session from 6 PM to 8 PM. Gloves and paper bags to collect the weeds and branches and mulch will be provided.
