[Highland Park] Saving the Schenley High School Building

Dear Highland Park Neighbors, This is a reminder that there are *several important meetings* coming up regarding the future of the Schenley building. The first is the PPS public hearing is on Monday, July 23 (previously posted incorrectly as July 22), at 6PM at the Board of Ed. Building on Bellefied Street (call 412-622-3868 by Monday before 12 noon to register to speak). Or just come to lend support if speaking is not for you! (Written testimony can be submitted to the Board of Education, or if you cannot be there, we can find someone to read your testimony for you.) Bill Peduto is sponsoring the second on July 25 at 7PM at the United Cerebral Palsy building, 4638 Center Avenue, 15213. Representatives from the immediate neighborhood around the Schenley building have been attending the Peduto sponsored meetings and many are advocating for converting the building to housing. We need to make our voices heard. Schenley, an architecturally magnificent building located on prime Oakland real estate, was closed to the PPS stakeholders under conditions that are no loner valid. It was recently made public that the plaster in the building negligible amounts of asbestos, not even enough to warrant monitoring by federal AHERA standards). Recently, a contractor stated that the building could be converted to apartments for $35M, a fraction of what the PPS administration stated in 2006 said it would cost to update heating and electrical systems and make the building available to students. And while the East End is suffering from the lack of gym facilities for its students and the Milliones building that houses University Prep requires a $20M gym addition, the Schenley sports facilities have no structural problems and lay gathering dust. In addition, the Peabody building has not had any structural or systems updates in 30-35 years, making it likely that this building will require millions of dollars of work in the foreseeable future. *Please come and advocate for an invaluable building that is part of our city’s history and heritage.* * * Best, Kathy Fine -- Kathy

[Highland Park] Duquesne Light / Davey Trees

Hi! Anyone receive a door tag in March/April this year from Duquesne Light / Davey Trees regarding the trimming and pruning of overgrown trees/shrubs/bushes, etc., from power lines that would be no cost to 'you'? If so - has your property been serviced by Davey Trees?? I am asking because we received the door tag and have had estimates from other tree trimmers for other overgrown trees on our property; the independent tree trimmers stated to wait until Davey does what Duquesne Light needs them to do; which means they did not see any evidence of Davey doing the job yet..... so I just called the phone number on the door tag and the rep from Davey Trees said they we in the HP area in early May and is trying to tell me that those trees and shrubs they trimmed could have grown back since they were here! I am VERY skeptical that they did not do the work at all! Just wanted to know if others in our neighborhood have had the same situation. I did call the Tree Trimming Dept of Duquesne Light and they are having the Mgmt Dept call me back. Thanks for reading and any responses :) Sue on N. Highland

Do you live in an apartment and wish you had a way to compost? Or do you have a beautiful garden and wish you could fertilize it for free? Garfield Community Farm is hosting a vermicomposting (worm composting) class on Saturday, July 28 from 9 AM-10:30 AM at the corner of Cornwall and Wicklow Streets in Garfield Heights. Learn how vermiculture is an easy and low maintenance way to compost and create high quality fertilizer. “But won’t it smell?” Nope, not if you’re doing it right. “Won’t the worms escape?” Worms prefer the warm, dark, damp bin and won’t make a run for it. “I have other questions!” Sure thing, come out to this class and we’ll talk about it. Required materials (please bring with you to the class as these items are not provided): - A worm bin (if you’re buying something new, look in the “storage bins” section of the store). Ideal size is approximately 18 inches wide, 16 inches long, and 16 inches deep. You can go larger than this, but not significantly smaller. Must have a lid. - Shredded newspaper. Can be shredded by hand, with an approximate width of 1 inch. Cross cut paper shredding is not recommended. Please note: newsprint only. No shredded junk mail (the paper is different). Optional item: - Rubber gloves. You will be touching worms and their castings. Hand washing facilities will be available. Provided materials: - Worms!
