Renaissance City Choirs announces open auditions, by appointment only, on August 29th (men) and August 30th (women) from 7:00-9:00 PM each evening. Auditions will be held in our rehearsal space at the East Liberty Presbyterian Church located at 116 South Highland Avenue in East Liberty. Each singer will have a 5-10 minute audition with the Artistic Director to enable us to develop an accurate and varied assessment of his or her capabilities. The Artistic Director will test their range and listen to a selection of music of their choice, demonstrating their best as well as their musical taste and knowledge. The audition will proceed with a small but effective breathing exercise. To schedule an audition: applicants should send an email no later than Friday August 26 to Andres Cladera, Artistic Director, at cladera(a)rccpittsburgh.org. Times are assigned on a first come, first served basis. The Renassiance City Choirs is a leading contributor to the cultural life of the tri-state area. We are Pittsburgh's only GLBT (and straight-friendly) chorus. Our programming blends challenging contemporary music (including many commissions of new works) with an ambitious, traditional repertoire. We do fun Broadway and pop music, too. We affirm, by example and through song, the worth and dignity of sexual minorities. Music that is gay positive and that openly supports issues related to human equality and justice is represented at all concerts. In addition to our three main performances per season, we are actively involved in community outreach throughout the region with a popular season of concerts and performances 2011-2012 Season Our 27th annual Holiday Concert, Don We Now Our Gay Apparel , will be on December 10th at the Carnegie Music Hall. Andres has our Christmas stocking jam-packed full of goodies this year. The concert will include music by Joan Szymko, Cris Williamson and Vivaldi. It also includes Thriller Christmas by David Maddux and an outrageously fun rendition of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. The Edgewood Symphony will join us again. On February 24th - 26th & March 2nd - 4th, we will reflect upon the music and mood of the 1980s with a special cabaret performance by ten of our singers at the Grey Box Theater. In Totally! Our '80s Show, we return to an era when many of Pittsburgh's premier GLBT support organizations took root. The all-1980s pop music program, interspersed with gripping video and eye-popping choreography, reflects upon this transformational and complex decade - its joy and its tragedy, its delights juxtaposed against the devastation that it wrought. The 1980s were a time of big hair, big shoulder pads and big scandals. Greed was king and MTV changed our music experience forever. It was also an era that ushered in AIDs, prompting a fight for life that continues today. RCC adds its unique perspective on the era with such period hits as Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and The Weather Girls' It's Raining Men, and finds deeper meaning in Michael Jackson's Thriller, Depeche Mode's People Are People and Pat Benatar's We Belong. Maestro Cladera also leads the RCC in showcasing Latin music from the 80s as represented by Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine. The RCC's Pride concert Got Milk? will be June 1st and 2nd at the Pittsburgh Opera in the Strip District. The RCC will perform music about and inspired by icon and martyr for gay rights Harvey Milk. Everyone knows Harvey Milk's story - his election as the first openly gay man to hold public office in California and his brutal assassination 11 months later. President Obama posthumously awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom and his birthday is designated as Harvey Milk Day in California. We devote this concert to exploring the development of the GLBT movement - from the people like Harvey Milk who inspired us through direct political action to the musicians and songwriters who raised our consciousness of the GLBT and feminist movements. [Highland Park] parent responses to PPS inquiry

I want to thank all the parents who responded to my post about the Pittsburgh Public Schools. It seems that many of us share similar frustrating and inexcusable child safety related experiences that need to be addressed. I'm reading through everything and will organize a meeting of all interested and concerned parents before the end of the month. We can decide as a unit how we'd like to proceed; the goal being to force accountability for and improvements in student safety related areas and incidents including public reporting of said incidents in our schools. In the meantime, I've agreed to share my story with one of the local papers. If you're interested in doing the same, please contact me and I'll get you in touch with the right people. Hi! Our son is going to be starting Kindergarten at Pittsburgh Colfax in a few weeks and we were wondering if there were any other children in the neighborhood that attend that school. We are trying to sort out our schedule for the coming school year and we were hoping to talk to other parents about busing (if there is any in Highland Park) and the times the children get picked up in the morning and dropped off in the afternoon. For Sale: Washer and Gas Dryer: The washer is a front loading Whirlpool Duet. The dryer is a front loading Maytag Neptune (gas). Both are in excellent working order and were bought in May of 2008. they have almost two years left on a transferable protection plan (warranty) with annual maintenace calls (Sears comes out and checks over the machine, does cleaning, replaces worn out or soon-to-be worn out parts, etc) Both are high-efficiency. I am writing in response to the "Be on the lookout - Crackheads in Parked Cars Around HP." Writing and publishing these discriminatory comments and revealing such damaging personal information about others via an electronic neighborhood mailing is unacceptable. This message can be considered a violation of privacy and is mostly likely illegal as not only was a license plate number revealed, but faces of these individuals were sent without permission. These alleged drug users very well could be harmless and productive members of society. These women could be your neighbors or the daughters, friends, or other relatives of your neighbors. Revealing their identities not only shames and threatens the individuals in the photos, it damages the emotional well-being and reputations of their family and friends. Furthermore, messages like this could be counterproductive for their potential recovery if, for example, they are exposed, lose support and go further into their disease. For these reasons, I urge anyone to critically think about the consequences of their actions before making such careless, unnecessary, and malicious comments or representations in such a public forum. I agree that as a community, we should be concerned with the open distribution and use of illicit substances in our neighborhood. But we cannot disregard the reality of suffering caused to individuals and families because of drug addiction. We should be appropriate, respectful and within our legal bounds in our approaches to dealing with these issues. Consider talking directly to our neighbors, getting involved with a neighborhood watch group, or even sending a simple message related to suspicious activity after it has been reported to the police. Additionally, I suggest that in the future the moderator of such a large mailing list in such a diverse neighborhood consider the concerns of all of those who could be negatively affected by language and content before allowing a message to be published.
