[Highland Park] Contractor Caution

I wanted to share a recent experience we had with a floor refinisher. Based upon all of the great recommendations from our HP neighbors, we hired Mr. Sandman, Jim Williamson, to refinish our kitchen and den floors. Mr. Sandman apparently has several jobs going at one time and did not stay while his workmen emptied everything in our den and moved as much as they could into our diningroom. Neither of us supervised or watched the removal of the furniture and miscellaneous items. When we finally looked in our diningroom we saw that the workmen loaded the top of our newly refinished diningroom table with items like picture frames, dvds, dvd player, comcast box, brass candle sticks, etc. There was nothing underneath to protect the top of our mahogany table. When we eventually cleared off the table and returned the items to the den, we saw a 7" gouge on the top of the table where items had been placed. I called Mr. Williamson to tell him and he indicated he'd come over and look and submit to his insurance. He came over with one of the workmen. The workman denied that they scratched the table. Mr. Sandman took pics and left. We mailed him the most recent estimate to refinish the table which was identical to the first refinishing job done as a result of water damage from the severe winter 2009-2010. Yesterday we received a letter from an attorney representing Mr. Williamson. In it he said his client was willing to pay us $200 instead of the $800 estimate but he denies that his workmen scratched the table. As a side, the reason the estimate was $800 is that it is a two pedestal table and both sides must be refinished as well as the leaf or they will never match. We had paid the same amount to repair the water damage. Both estimates came from different people. We did have a furniture refinisher look at the table but he felt the gouge was too deep for him to repair just the gouge. So, although the Sandman did a good job on our floors, he is not willing to accept responsibility for the damage his workmen did to our table. Marsha and Jerry Aarons

Hi HP: I’m looking to venture into some woodworking as a hobbyist, with an ambition to make two oak chests before the holidays. I’ve also tried some wood inlay projects with reasonable success. Are there any experienced wood workers or carpenters near Callowhill who might be willing to lend some experience to a novice as the need arises? [Highland Park] Roof tiles

We are looking old replacement roof tiles to finish our newly rebuilt porch roof. Here is the description in case anyone has any lying around. We will take any amount from a few to about 250. New ones are available but are too orange and we would like old weathered ones. "Interlocking flat roof tiles measuuring 8x11 inches." They are flat rather than the Spanish, curved ones. They may be called English tiles and may have been made by Ludowcki Co. I will try to send a photo. Many thanks. --
