I received this information from Jennifer Thoma in Patrick Dowd's office. Given the recent string of posts- prompted by the recent gay bashing- but which have centered on the police response time. The Citizen Police Academy provides a unique opportunity to intereact with the police as well as the City. I'm going to apply. Want to join me? Twice a year, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police sponsors an opportunity for members of the community to become closely acquainted with the roles and responsibilities of the Police Bureau. The Pittsburgh Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA) brings the police and the community close together in a setting that offers a sample of police training to each participant. According to Dowd, involvement in this program, not only teaches citizens about the police, but possibly more importantly, teaches the police about real citizens, and helps the police learn more about how to best serve the people of Pittsburgh. [Highland Park] Alert about apparent trash in your yard

I received this note from a friend out of the area- but this was also on the news a few days ago. Anybody that sees a plastic bottle in their yard would think nothing of picking it up to throw it away. But look carefully to see if it has liquid and a cap. Looks like these things are starting to pop up around the U.S. Check the Snopes web site below, it's pretty scary. Important warning! NOT A JOKE! Pay attention to this. 1. A plastic bottle with a cap (Like a normal water bottle). 2. A little Drano. 3. A little water. 4. A small piece of foil. 5. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM (Less than 30 seconds)!! 6. No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc. People are finding these bombs in mailboxes and in their yards, just waiting for someone to pick it up intending to put it in the trash. It takes about 30 seconds to blow after you move the thing. See "SNOPES" below....it's true. Dear Neighbors Thanks to the wonderful volunteer efforts of hundreds of Highland Park residents, we have 120 new street trees in our neighborhood and by the fall we hope to have 70 more. We have concentrated on the main streets of Highland Park. For the Spring of 2011, we would like to plant trees on our smaller side streets. If you are interested in a street tree(s) in front of your house, please fill out the attached form and email it back to this email address (if you have an electronic signature) or put it in the mail slot at 1232 N. Highland Ave. Note-application deadline for the Spring planting is August 20th. Since this tree planting will involve many blocks, we will need much help. We hope you will consider volunteering for one or more of the following: 1. Make your entire block beautiful by being a "block tree captain". This will largely involve asking your neighbors to sign a tree request form for their homes 2. Donate about 5 hours of your time for general organizing of this planting. 3. If you are a Highland Park Tree Tender and have not been involved with any of the previous plantings, please respond to this email to identify yourself.
