[Highland Park] Stray white/orange cat

A seemingly stray (but very well socialized) cat is hanging around my yard the past few days. He keeps coming back and would be easy to catch if he belongs to someone. I'm over in Morningside, but perhaps he could have wandered from Highland Park. He's a male, I think unneutered, not kitten-size but not all that old - maybe 2-3 years old? White body with orange striped tail and some orange/light brown patches on his ears and face. He's very friendly and not at all afraid of people, or of my indoors cat up against the window yowling at him. He's dirty and his fur is matted - I get the impression he's been outside on his own for a bit. No collar/tags. Anyone know him, or is anyone looking to take in a sweet cat who needs some love, if he keeps coming around and I can't find his owner? I don't think our household can support more than the three we've got, but he seems like a sweet little guy who'd make a lovely addition to someone's home. S

[Highland Park] Abandoned Homes

Hello Members, It is funny that everyone is posting in regards to the abandoned homes. The worst part about this situation for me and my family is the rapist was living I believe in one of the homes across the street from my home! It was said on the news that the rapist was living in the 900 block of North Saint Clair Street, so I can only assume it was one of these homes. It is very scary because my stepmother and myself work at night a lot, and this could have been one of us easily. I heard that the Highland Park community organization owns the one home it has been abandoned for many years why isn't being fixed or sold, or even torn down? The other home unfortunately caught on fire, but the family is working to have it restored. How do we rectify this and keep our community as safe as possible? Francine M. [Highland Park] Last night 's major police action

Last night from 1:30-2:30am about 6 police cars with their sirens blaring were moving about and parked at the intersection of Mellon street and Mellon Terrace. The officers walked around with big flashlights, searched, stopped traffic. Does anybody know what went on? There was loud talking afterwards, but living on the 5th floor, I could not figure out what happened. I am just curious what's going on in my neighborhood that requires such a police force. Edith

[Highland Park] Flower bed at the resevoir

Several years ago as a volunteer, I tended the flower bed at the resevoir that had been lovingly planted by (I think) Del Zigler and others. It is located at the upper end of the resevoir where cars can park closest to the water. I found that the spring digging, weeding and planting was really too much for one person and I was also unable to tend it much in the summer therefore the annuals did not get watered and were taken over by weeds. Also, without a water source, I needed to fill my trunk with gallons jugs of water for use in planting. "Water water everywhere.." I can't count the ways I tried to take water out of the resevoir for this purpose, including tying a rope to a watering can and trying to dip it (too light) and using something heavier but then forgetting to hold onto the rope when I tossed it in, whoops-- gone. This neglected bed is really unfortunate as those who walk there can observe and certainly needs some tlc. As far as I know, this is not part of the City Parks Dept. but I don't know. I am writing to see if anyone is interested in getting together a committee to help in the future. Here is what I envision: 1. Pay or find funding to get someone to roto-till the entire bed. 2. Figure out whether one needs to put down a season of black plastic to kill all the weeds or use some other method. 3. Rake, fertilize, etc. 4. Decide what to plant and buy plants (or get donations from nurseries, or sharing from neighbors in HP. 5. Plant perennials and annuals, bulbs, etc. 6. Plan for tending, watering and weeding. 7. Plan for future efforts, volunteers, etc. 8. Try to have a water source installed nearby (Jim Ferlo?, Patrick Dowd?) If anyone is interested in thinking along these lines, please let me know. I think we could make this bed a charming addition to the park. Many thanks, Susan Ryan --
