I called the mayor's office last year about this, as I wanted to get a backyard firepit. Open burning in barrels like you're describing is illegal. Chimeneas, firepits, etc must be on concrete, at least 15 feet from any structure, and if a neighbor complains, you have to put it out. Rachel M. Kudrick

[Highland Park] Carpet and Awnings - FREE

We have about 300 sq feet of beige carpet that is almost brand new (used for 4 months). It's been ripped up into a few pieces and includes the foam pad. In very good shape. We also have dark brown awnings that we took down from our house. There are four awnings that spanned the front porch. This is all sitting on our front porch and is yours for the taking. 1022 Mellon St.

[Highland Park] lost wallet.

I was driving home on Friday night/Saturday morning after dropping someone off in Highland Park, and I pulled over to check on a noise coming from the back wheels of my car in the 900 block of N. Euclid. The noise was coming from snow built up in the wheels wells, so I just continued on my way. However, I think I might have dropped my wallet when I got out of my car. At first on Saturday morning, I thought I had left it in my other pants at home, but after searching all last night after work, I learned that wasn't the case. It has my debit card, which I now have canceled, some gift cards, and my school ID from CCAC in it. If someone has found it in the snow in the 900 Block of N. Euclid, or anywhere else for that matter, I could sure use it back. It is a thin brown leather wallet with credit card slots on the outside. Thanks in advance, Sean

[Highland Park] Rules for outdoor burning within the city?

The house behind me on Mellon Street (our backyards adjoin) is having work done on it. This morning whoever is doing the work started a fire in a metal drum and is burning large amounts of wood. The amount of smoke is horrible (maybe they're burning more than just wood?) and it stinks inside my house. The whole block is covered with gray smoke, too. Is this legal in the city, to burn what is essentially trash? I'm positive that the wood is from the construction they're doing, so who knows if it's painted, varnished, etc. Anyone know who i would contact about this? This is at least the second time it's happened since they've been working there and it's really unpleasant. Also can't be great for all the kids at Fulton, across the street from my house. If anyone knows what they're burning over there, or who I would contact about getting them to not do it again, I'd greatly appreciate hearing about it. Thanks! Genevieve

Neighbors, Last month I requested recommendations on appliance repair persons and received several e-mails that said Robert Spirko was very competent. I have tried unsuccessfully for weeks to try to set up an appointment with him, endlessly playing telephone tag . He never answers either of his numbers which I find odd for someone running a business. Is he currently working for anyone at this time? Any suggestions or comments from his former "customers?"
