[Highland Park] Suggestions for Movers?

Hi there- I am going to be moving into Highland Park sometime after Christmas and am curious if anyone has referrals for careful movers (local or otherwise) with whom you have had a positive experience. I am only moving from Aspinwall to HP and am hoping for a mover with a reasonable flat fee for moving. Thanks. Joan Anson (412) 784-1579 P.S. Someone told me that movers here charge less for weekday moves instead of weekend moves-can anyone confirm?

Just a reference for the future.... Animal Friends has a rehab program for pit bulls that are in their shelter. They also have a contact to place a pit bull in a home with a pit bull trainer if space is available. The operative word here is space available as most of you know that Animal Friends is the only no kill shelter in Pittsburgh and as such has a "closed door" policy in that they can refuse to take a dog in if they are maxed out or do not feel a dog is adoptable. As far as I recall Animal Rescue League puts pit bulls to sleep rather than trying to rehab them or place them. Pit Bull is probably the breed they get the most of in their shelter. Being a Pittsburgher all my life I remember when all 3 shelters announced that they would work toward becoming "NO KILL". However after Animal Rescue League's capital campaign was over, they never worked toward achieving no kill status nor did Humane Society on the North Side. Animal Rescue League does have a contract with the City of Pittsburgh to accept dogs Animal Control picks up and receives money for each dog they put to sleep. I believe Animal Rescue League is looking for a new Director and I am hopeful that with a new Director perhaps he or she can take the Board in a new direction. I am in no way being critical of the employees who work in Animal Rescue League as working in an environment like that is very difficult. San Francisco has been a no NO KILL city since 1994. None of its shelters put homeless dogs and cats down for overcrowding. I would encourage all of you to read the book called Redemption...The Myth of Pet Overpopulation and the No Kill Revolution in America by Nathan Winograd as it tells the story of animal sheltering in the US. [Highland Park] Black Pit Bull captured

Hi, I wanted to let you all know that the black pit bull that was wondering in Highland Park was caught yesterday. He is in the Animal Rescue League now (412-661-6452). He is a very shy puppy and I am sure he would greatly appreciate a loving home. Thank you all for the information that you have provided about where he was seen last. Best wishes Constanza.-

[Highland Park] Notary fees in PA are mandated by law

As this question has come up before, I thought I'd forward this fyi to the list. I was previously a notary in Pennsylvania for many years. In Pennsylvania, *all* notaries are required by law to charge the same prices for notary services. I believe that fee (for a simple affidavit) is still $5 per signature. So whatever document you have, if *all* you need is your signature notarized (and you have proper ID), the only fee you may legally be charged is that five dollars - period. No exceptions. There *is* a clause that does allow notaries to charge for 'other services' and to set their own rates for that. For instance, a notary may charge you whatever they wish to photocopy a document for you. However, notaries are also required by law to display their prices for fees on a prominent sign - not just the state-mandated costs but their costs for other services. Unfortunately, in this area, their seem to be many notaries who either do not care, or do not understand, and charge a range of prices for notarization. This is not legal and can (if reported) result in the loss of their notary commission. The only place I have found to recommend is AAA at Motor Square Garden (you don't have to be a member). I'm sure there are many others. Unfortunately, there are also many others who feel it's ok to charge you whatever fee they want. Anyone interested in verifying this, or getting more information (including locating a notary) may call PAN (PA Association of Notaries). Their phone number is 1-800-944-8790. They also have a web site which I believe still has a listing of notaries in the area. I would strongly encourage anyone who is asked to pay more than five dollars to have a signature notarized, to refuse and to report them. PAN is more than willing to intercede for you as well and explain the law to a notary.
