dear highland neighborhood My family may be moving to Pittsburgh . we shall be visiting in march . I am trying to get info on different areas and someone suggested highland. we will be working at upmc and hope to be close by and near good schools, does any one have a moment to tell me about schools in the area private or public, the area in general, I am searching for an area where i can walk to everything or get public transport, and a diverse community. We dropped in last weekend for a meal but did not stay. We were ushered unceremoniously to the basement even though the upstairs room was empty. Apparently, the upstairs room is reserved for parties but it appears to be the better of the two dining areas. Why not let folks eat there unless there is a party going on ....... However; I digress, what put both of us off and made us leave was the 'aroma' in the basement. It could generously be described as fetid and was most unappealing. The evening was not a total disaster as we tried La Casa for tapas at 5882 Elsworth and loved it so much we stayed for four hours. Bruce In a message dated 22/02/2007 9:35:53 A.M. But it's a new restaurant so I'm sure they would appreciate it if folks checked it out to fix that second problem :) The prices were fair. They have menus out front which you could check out. Dear All, Our black and white tuxedo cat is missing. He only stays outside a few minutes each evening, so it is very unusual that he has not returned. He is black with a white chest, scalloped front white paws, white back paws, a white tummy, and white whiskers. He is five years old, and his name is Humo. I am attaching a picture. We live on Highland Court - the little walkway between Mellon Terrace and Callowhill - closer to Negley than Highland. He is not accustomed to being outside for long. Reward for his safe return. [Highland Park] Dog attack N Highland Ave

This evening, Friday at around 5:30, while walking one of our dogs, an aggressive medium-sized pit-bull, all beige, with a triangular white patch on its neck, came up and attacked our dog. This dog had no collar on. My partner, who was walking our dog, was for a while able to kick it away. A woman and child who were driving by very kindly pulled over, came over with a golf club and helped drive the dog away, even offering to take my partner and our dog into their van and drive them home. The attack happened at the corner of N. Highland and Jackson St. First, THANK YOU to the person who pulled over, whoever you are. Second, if anyone is familiar with this dog we would very much appreciate it if you could let us know - while neither my partner nor our dog was physically hurt, we would feel better knowing whether this was an animal that just happened to get out of its home or whether this is an animal we need to be concerned about in the future. Finally, this raised for us a legal question which perhaps someone could answer? Had this animal continued to attack and we'd been unable to fend it off, what would have been the consequences of shooting this dog? I happened to be at home when this attack happened. But, disregarding for a moment the ethical issue (and it would be a huge issue for me personally), had the health of my partner or our dog (who was leashed, collared and licensed, by the way) been at risk, I likely would have considered this, for better or for worse. Yes, the weapon and carry permit are legal. I apologize in advance for any shock this may carry, but as this is an issue that now has occurred several times for us, it seems germane to at least put forward the question. For Inquirers, Newer Members, Old Timers Looking for a Refresher . . . . The next series of "St. Andrew's 101" will be offered the four Wednesday evenings in March, 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th, from 7 p.m. - 8:15 p.m., gathering upstairs in the Parish Hall, in the St. Francis Chapel. Topics: Week 1: The Christian Way Week 2: Our Anglican Heritage Week 3: Polity: Church and Diocese Week 4: About St. Andrew's I fine-tune this every year, with the hope that a certain amount of presentation will be mixed in and shaped by questions, comments, conversation as we go along. Often there are some folks who will attend all four sessions and others who choose to come simply to one, two, or three, as schedules and interest allow. At this point I'm open also about Nursery Care for infants/younger children. If that would make a difference for you, let me know and I'll see what we can arrange. Bishop Duncan will be with us on Sunday morning, April 15, and we will celebrate Confirmations, Receptions, and Reaffirmations at the 11 a.m. service on that day. Cynthia: You live at Jackson & Sheriden; I live at Jackson & Heberton. YOU are the one who stole my birds and I want them back! How many cardinals do you need? Thanks for all the suggestions from the group. I'm thinking now it's the bird feeder after all. This morning I saw two birds (one a cardinal) on a plate of bird seed we put out almost two weeks ago. It had been covered with snow and ice that just melted the other night. So if they can come back for wet seeds, it's obvious they're not getting anything from the feeder. Last year our back yard was Grand Central Station for the birds.
