Anthony Coccia of "Anthony's Original Italian Ice" died a few months ago, so sadly this will be the first summer in a long time during which we won't see him near the park entrance with his Italian ice cart. Eastern Standard Time, no-reply(a)citizenobserver.com writes: Pittsburgh Bureau of Police - Zone 5 Case Alert Walnut Market Robbery-Highland Park WALNUT MARKET ROBBERY PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Police are investigating a robbery that occurred in Highland Park this morning at a local store. On Friday, November 30, 2007 at 10:22 am, Zone Five officers and paramedics responded to the Walnut Market at 5901 Bryant Street for a report of a male shot. When they arrived, they discovered that a 59-year-old male victim had been shot in the cheek. The victim was transported to UPMC Presbyterian with a gunshot to his cheek which also traveled through his neck. Early reports indicated that the victim was alert and conscious but he has been downgraded to critical condition. Detectives learned that the victim was working behind the counter when the suspect approached the counter with some food items. The suspect pulled out a gun in an apparent robbery attempt and shot the victim in the face. The suspect fled the store following the shooting and it is unknown if anything was taken. Another employee was another section of the store at the time of the shooting and was not injured. The suspect is described as a young black male, possibly 20 years of age, approximately 5’10 to 6”00 tall, with a mustache. He was last seen wearing a grey fleece coat with a black hooded sweatshirt underneath, and black sweat pants. The identity of the victim has not been released and he remains in critical condition. Due to the victim’s condition, the Homicide Squad has been assigned to investigate this case. At this time, an arrest has not been made. The Pittsburgh Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect in this case. [Highland Park] Highland Park Playgroup

My husband, Matt, posted a few days ago regarding the possibility of starting a local playgroup and has now passed the baton to me. We're very interested in starting one as soon as possible. Our daughter is 19 months but I'm hoping that we can form a relaxed and inclusive group that is open to children of different ages. After all, it's also about the opportunity to meet and chat up other parents who live in the area. I've been talking to a friend who is interested and we're hoping to schedule a playgroup on Monday or Friday mornings and are open to suggestions on where we can meet. Yvonne VH has suggested the possibility of meeting at the Pittsburgh Toy Lending Library since membership is pretty cheap for the year when you volunteer a bit---volunteer 4 hours a month, w/your child if you want, and it's only 35 dollars for the year. Does anyone have any other suggestions that we can consider? And can we shoot for starting our group in the next couple of weeks? Leesa Reynolds

*UNWRAPPED – DEC 1 – FUNDRAISING EVENT – TOMORROW NIGHT AT 7PM!* Tomorrow Saturday, December 1st, 7-10pm will be Union Project's 6th annual Unwrapped Holiday Fundraiser. Unwrapped features unique entertainment, original local artwork, and live and silent auctions. The evening will showcase the city's young talent from Pittsburgh's CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) High School and DWG dance troupe; Unwrapped will be emceed by Andrew Stockey, Morning Anchor for WTAE Channel 4 Action News. The live and silent auctions will include gift certificates from local businesses, entertainment packages, a celebrity hosted dinner, and a custom fitted bicycle. Over 90 items in total will be included in the auction. Food for the distinctive evening will be provided by the Union Project's Eat UP Café and Catering, and will include an assortment of gourmet finger foods. Greetings, I just wanted to give everyone a "heads up" that you have a local community member that specializes in Computer ( PC ) Support and repairs and also has a "quick answer" help desk that is a local number, ( I'm on Winterton St. ... not in Asia ! ) for existing clients. My name is Steve Karl and I run and maintain the Pittsburgh PC Help Desk which can be found at: http://www.sightsea.com/pghpchd/ My "pet peeve" ::: New Computers that run very poorly because that "name brand company" put all that junk-ware in the machine. I've gotten really good at cleaning them up and making them perform well. Free Anti-Virus software that out performs the "2 big sellers" and is very "light weight" and easy on your PC. Initial phone consult is no charge, and most "quick calls" from existing clients are also no charge. Hardware repair / replacement also.
