He came to our house a few weeks ago-said he was a neighbor and gave me an elaborate story about where he worked (far away) and that he just got off work. It was late at night- maybe after midnight. We were up and our porch light was on. I think he said his last name was Jenkins. I told him we didn't have any cash. I live on Jackson near Heberton.

We found an old Whirlpool freezer (12.76 cubic feet) in our basement when we moved in last year. It is ugly on the outside and needs a cleaning, but seems to work fine. Its free to anyone who's willing to move it out. If interested, email me or call 363-7977. Sue

[Highland Park] Rock band on Friday night

Did anyone else hear the rock band playing on Friday night? I could hear it clearly from my third floor, but when I went outside to investigate and track it down, I couldn't place where the music was coming from. It was like a Ghost Band. Whoever they were, they were good and tight. I was wondering if it was one-time special event or if it's going to be a regular occurrence. Dan

Hi everyone, I am helping a friend find a home for a young dog. Bruno is about 7 months old, half boxer, half pit bull. He is very sweet and personable and desperately needs a loving home* Please email me if you or anyone you know are interested in meeting him. Thanks. Lori * It's a longish story. His original owners have fallen on hard times and were forced to move in with folks who wouldn't allow Bruno. My friend graciously offered him temporary shelter, but is unable to keep him permanently since her job requires frequent and lengthy travel. There is a long waiting list at Animal Friends, and no one involved can bear anything but a no-kill shelter. Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

[Highland Park] Tony the Scammer

Dear Neighbors, A guy who called himself "Tony" came to my porch (5554 Wellesley) last night at 1.30 am, claiming that his car had broken down. He described the house he lived in, five doors down from mine, said he was the father of the two little girls who ride their trikes in Velie and on Wellesley. I just moved in, so I don't yet know who lives in which house, and had no reason to think he wasn't a neighbor. I'm up late, maybe he is too...what do I know? He claimed that he needed $13. to pay a tow-truck, etc. THe story was totally unbelievable, but I wasn't sure, so I gave him $5 and he went away. Then I thought better about it and called the cops. They sent an officer round who said that what this guy is doing is illegal, and that he can be arrested just for loitering on or looking as though he was casing a house at night. The thing to do is to say to him: "I will help you. I will call the police right now and they will make sure you get help." He will, of course, decide he doesn't need the money so badly, and take off. I found out from a neighbor this morning that this guy has been working our neighborhood. If he comes to your door, by all means call the police immediately. They will come and search the neighborhood for him. Kimberly Latta

THIS GUY "TONY" CAME TO MY NEIGHBOR'S DOOR AT 12:30 LAST NIGHT. HE WAS ON HER PORCH LOOKING IN HER FRONT DOOR SINCE SHE HAD HER LIGHTS ON. THE DOG BARKED AND BARKED. SHE WENT TO THE DOOR AND ASKED WHAT HE WANTED AND HE SAID HE WAS A NEIGHBOR BUT THE DOG WOULDN'T STOP BARKING SO HE SAID, "OH, NEVER MIND" AND HE LEFT! THIS WAS IN THE 1000 BLOCK OF PORTLAND STREET.
