Regarding planting trees on your curbstrip, this is some information from the Pittsburgh Shade Tree Comission: "They absolutely need to have Forestry Division do a site analysis and plant only recommended species. We're working on getting a list together with new city forester. We're in transition with new dept. head plus trying to catch up with years of neglect of issues such as policy on homeowners planting trees on city property etc. That coupled with the fact we have no staff---well, please urge people to be patient." Part of the reason why it is important to do this is to prevent problems with the species planted: a) being invasive species (invasive species are the #1 cause of loss of biodiversity) b) branches getting into the powerlines c) roots getting into the pipes, as well as damaging sidewalks d) preventing maintanence issues with fruit and leaves falling over the street/sidewalk/sewers Trees last for a LONG time, so it is important to make sure that appropriate ones are planted. Good Morning, Indeed, I have been reading and tracking the emails regarding noise in and around the Highland Park area. First, Dan is correct in citing the below City ordinance. I also followed up with a phone call to Parks and Recreation regarding the shelter permits in Highland Park, and all permits holders must conform with the below ordinance, the only exception being if they have a permit for a deejay. In order to ensure compliance, I have posted of the park permits issued at our front desk, so the officers can verify compliance. Second, Zone 5 has two sound meters in our inventory, but there is a snafu (hey, I work for a governmental agency, so it's not perfect.) I found that only one officer was trained in the device, and he no longer works at Zone 5. I will contact the Training Academy to rectify this situation ASAP. Finally, not sure about the feasibility of posting an officer in one location, but I have reminded each of our officers about the ordinance, so that we can remind citizens of their responsibilities, until the training is complete. We moved into a corner house in Highland Park last fall. My husband and I wanted to plant some flowering trees in the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street. The mission of NatureLAB Charter School is to foster a nurturing and caring environment in which a rigorous science-centered curriculum enables children to think critically and solve creatively the challenges of race, class, and economics. NatureLAB Charter School is envisioned as a science, mathematics, and technology public school serving children K-8. We anticipate submitting our charter application to the district in November, and depending on approval, we anticipate a September 2006 opening. As a reminder, charter schools are public schools in all sense of the words. Any child living in the district (or any other district if they provide the funding and transportation) can apply to enroll in a charter school. Charter schools are an added choice in schooling and are free of cost to parents. NatureLAB Charter School will feature classes no bigger than 20 students, pods that create small schools within schools (K, 1-2, 3-5, 6-8), case management for each child (all students, regardless of identification), a school within a library setting, technology integrated into the curriculum in every classroom, professional teacher setting (including offices, computers, and support staff for each pod) and a 26,000 square foot outdoor science classroom (complete with greenhouses, learning pavilion, performance space, and a working mini-farm.) [If you cannot make it to the activity described below, drop off your printer cartridges at 914 Heberton Street.] Shadyside Celebrates ³Earth Day on Walnut² Neighborhood Event Benefits the Earth and the Community] Shadyside, PA...The Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh will be celebrating "Earth Day on Walnut" on Saturday, April 23, 2005. Centered around the Walnut Street shopping corridor, the event will feature earth-friendly exhibits, a neighborhood clean-up, a live broadcast of WPTT Radio¹s ³Garden Talk with Jane Nugent,² a drive-up recycling area, a happy hour benefit for Pennsylvania Resources Council, and more. Now in its third year, Earth Day on Walnut 2005 is sponsored by the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce and Agents of Change Recycling. The event provides a fun and informative day for the community, while encouraging respect for the Earth. The neighborhood clean-up will take place from 7:30 to 9:30 AM, and volunteers are needed and welcome. Interested parties should meet at Cappy¹s Cafe at 7AM on Walnut Street for breakfast and cleaning information. Volunteers will assemble into teams and be eligible for prizes. >From 11:30 AM until 2:30 PM, Agents of Change Recycling will collect phone books, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, and cardboard. In addition, old cell phones can be recycled to benefit the Women¹s Center and Shelter of Pittsburgh; printer cartridges will benefit Education Innovations. Animal Friends will have two- and four-legged representatives on hand, collecting gently used blankets and towels for the shelter animals. Earth-friendly groups will be on Walnut Street from noon until 3PM, speaking with neighbors and visitors on topics ranging from bees and birds to dogs and dirt. Jane Nugent of WPTT Radio 1360 will broadcast her popular ³Garden Talk with Jane Nugent² live from the Walnut Street parklet from 12:30 until 2:00. The gardening diva will be discussing composting and other urban gardening topics. Finally, to wrap up the day, many area restaurants and bars will hold a Happy Earth Happy Hour from 4 to 7 PM.
