Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra 2nd Annual Community Partners Concert benefits Education Innovations, Inc. Check your mailbox and mark your calendars! In early April, brochures about the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras 2nd Annual Community Partners Concert taking place on Friday, June 24, 2005 will be mailed out. Proceeds from this concert will go directly to more than 50 participating community partner organizations, including Education Innovations, Inc. When buying tickets to the Community Partners concert this year, designate Education Innovations, Inc. as the recipient and we will receive the full price of the ticket. Tickets for this event go on sale Monday, April 4 and can be purchased at the Heinz Hall box office, by visiting the Heinz Hall Box Office, calling 412-392-4900 or online at www.pittsburghsymphony.org. Tickets range from $21.25 to $112.25 with good main floor seats only $61.25. But why wait. Be the first to get your tickets by calling Education Innovations, Inc. Union Project Update - www.unionproject.org - Glass Restoration Registration Deadline is Friday! The registration deadline for April classes is this Friday, April 1. If you are a past student of Union Project stained glass classes you are eligible for a $25 discount on all stained glass classes! Many of the April classes will begin working on the sanctuary windows of the Union Project. These beautiful windows are some of the most visible stained glass windows in the building, and will be seen by thousands of people for many years to come. Thursday evening classes are being offered. Also, new in April, will be our weekend stained glass intensive. Only 2 spots remain in this class. Class members will work from Friday evening thru Sunday afternoon to completely restore their windows. Lunch will be included on 2 days, and a smaller class will allow for more student/teacher interaction. Class members will see the fruits of their labor almost instantly. Call for Artists, Farmers, Community Groups Union Project announces a call for Artists, Farmers, and Community Groups to participate in the annual Artist’s and Farmers Market. Detailed information about all aspects of the market can be found on the website, www.unionproject.org. Artists are invited to participate as art making instructors for the Summer Artist’s and Farmer’s Market. Past artists have included jugglers, ceramicists, mosaic artists, painters, and more. Artists are encourage to be creative in designing the arts activities. Proposals are being accepted and a stipend is awarded to each artist chosen. Deadline for submissions is April 22, 2005. Artists and Farmers are also invited to participate by setting up retail booths to sell their wares on the highly visible corner of Stanton and Negley Avenues and Community Groups are invited to set up booths as a way to provide information to neighborhood residents about what else is happening in the city. Magic Penny Garden Dates Announced Artist Stephanie Flom will be engaging community members to create a garden installation on our highly visible corner at Stanton and Negley Avenues this summer. Through the Persephone Project, Stephanie has been promoting gardening as contemporary art and gardeners as artists. Her Magic Penny Gardens are made with the perennial plants shared by community members and honor the stories that gardeners associate with the special plants that they share. Registered project participants will work with Stephanie to create a Magic Penny Garden for the Union Project. They will also explore her concept of gardens-as-art and share their own creative experiences in their gardens. Participants will also help to plan the community events associated with the garden and have an opportunity to stay involved for the on-going maintenance of the garden. Sessions will meet on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 pm for 8 weeks beginning June 1 and running through July 20. The suggested donation to cover cost of materials is $25 per person. The class is open to 10 people. Members should be age 16 and up. Press Release Contact: Jessica King 412-363-4550 jess(a)unionproject.org March 28, 2005 For Immediate Release Union Project Announces Groundbreaking for Phase 1 Renovations and Recent Grants The Union Project, an East End non-profit organization that is restoring the former Union Baptist Church to provide gathering and working space for artists, community builders and people of faith, is announcing a public groundbreaking to celebrate the beginning of new construction on the 15,000 square foot historic structure. With the receipt of several recent grants, over $1,226,000 has been raised toward the $1,646,000 Phase I goal. The public groundbreaking event will coincide with a Union Project volunteer workday on Saturday April 16. Volunteers are invited to come assist in final demolition projects between 10 am and 3 pm. The public is invited to come for tours and a small groundbreaking ceremony beginning at 1pm. Capital Grants were made by the Richard King Mellon Foundation ($350,000), an anonymous donor ($250,000), the Hillman Foundation ($50,000), and State Senator Jim Ferlo ($5,000) and State Representative Joseph Preston ($5,000) through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. As well, Union Project Board members have pledged over $30,000 to the Capital Campaign and over 1,100 community volunteers along with stained glass restoration class members have contributed over $500,000 in in-kind services to the project. Additional funds are needed to meet the $1,646,000 goal, and fundraising is expected to be complete by Labor Day this year. “We’ve worked long and hard with many neighbors and friends to build this organization and raise this support. We are humbled and grateful for the outpouring of support from foundations, government, business and individuals. We can see the goal and are excited to start construction so this vision can become a reality!” says Executive Director Jessica King. City Council members Len Bodack and Bill Peduto have allocated $7,500 in Community Development Block Grant funds to support the programming, outreach and planning efforts of the Union Project. Bodack says, “I am very excited to work with the Union Project. Soon, this gateway to Highland Park will be a truly unique neighborhood resource ‘to connect, create, and celebrate’”. Peduto added, “I am confident that the good work of the Union Project will continue to serve the needs of Pittsburgh Residents.” Massaro Corporation has generously donated their services as Construction Managers and helped to make this grassroots project possible. Joseph Massaro, III, says, "One of our Guiding Principles is that we support the communities in which we work, and our involvement in this important project has given us an excellent opportunity to live out our values. The Union Project is a tribute to what can be accomplished when the community works together on a shared vision." Phase 1 construction will include necessary fire safety and ADA Accessibility changes, the renovation of the 3-story former Sunday school wing into office and studio space, and the renovation of the former narthex into Union Station Coffee Shop in partnership with Peabody High School Culinary Arts Academy Students. Since its inception, over 3 years ago, the Union Project has worked with over 1,100 volunteers to prepare the building for new construction. The upcoming renovations will continue to provide opportunities for volunteers to be part of the restoration of this important community landmark. Hello all, Today a large dog entered my yard and apparantly attacked the cage where our rabbit lives. We came home to find the cage in disarray and the bottom open. We did not find our rabbbit, nor any signs that the dog was successful in catching him. Hopefully he escaped. If anyone sees a black rabbit with one ear floped and one up, please contact me at 412-665-0513. My daughter is quite disturbed that her bunny is missing for Easter. Dear neighbors, Three girls from Highland Park participate in the 40-member River City Youth Chorale, a performing ensemble for girls and young women ages 8-18. They practice Tuesdays evenings during the school year at CMU's Fine Arts Building (8-12 year olds from 6-7:30, older girls from 7:30 to 9pm). Our daughter joined four years ago, and it has been a source of excellent music instruction, important friendships, discipline and self-esteem building. She's enjoyed the concerts, choir summer camp, winter retreat weekend, and performing around town. You can arrange for interested girls to visit a rehearsal and schedule an audition by calling choir director, Suzanne Newman in the choir office, 412/635-8871.
