The offers of help, possible housing and just open neighborliness has helped buoy me up while facing an open house this weekend. Rob should be going down to Pgh. in mid March to find housing. Hello Highland Park, My husband will be starting his Nephrology fellowship at UPMC this July. I am a librarian. We are looking for a house, townhouse or large apartment to rent in Highland Park. We have two children, aged 1 and 3. We are selling our home in Rhode Island and will be in Pittsburgh for at least two years. We are very interested in being part of a community that is diverse, safe, and vibrant. I hope this is an appropriate use of the list. Hi everyone! It is already time to start planning the HPCC Children's Committee Spring Party. It will be held this year on April 3. I'd love to really make this a fun way to bring in spring (and send out winter!!) for the families of Highland Park, but I'll need lots of volunteers, so please e-mail me if you'd be willing to help plan the party, help on the day of the party, or donate something. [Highland Park] Dilworth Traditional Academy hosts "Reflections of Childhood" Art Auction

More than two dozen local artists have used a variety of media--ranging from collage and decoupage to acrylic paint and woodcarving--to create a collection of unique mirrors as well as original art pieces that will serve as the centerpiece of "Reflections of Childhood: A Celebration and Art Auction." On Friday, February 20, art lovers will have an opportunity to bid on these one-of-a-kind mirrors and art pieces when The Dilworth Traditional Academy for the Arts & Humanities, a Pittsburgh Public School, hosts a fund-raising event in the school's auditorium at 6200 Stanton Avenue, East Liberty/Highland Park. KDKA's Jon Burnett will host as auctioneer for the event. Admission to the adult-only event, which will feature musical entertainment and refreshments, is $5 per couple. This unique event was conceived by neighborhood activists, teachers, and parents and has the full support from the schools principal. According to Dilworth Principal Robert F. O'Keefe. "The art auction is designed to promote interest in the arts and humanities, create broader awareness of Dilworth within the community and demonstrates to educational funders that the school community is taking an active role. Construction Junction--a 30,000-square-foot warehouse in Point Breeze that sells new and used building materials--donated the supplies needed to assemble the 30 mirrors, which range in size from large floor mirrors to small wall mirrors. The February 20 festivities, beginning at 6:00 pm and concluding at 9:00 pm, will include: LIVE AUCTION Bid on mirrors and original art works created by 30 prominent artists including; Cheryl Capezzuti, Marybeth Steisslinger, Joann Kieler, Barbara Mingus & students of Dilworth, Gary Pletsch, Joann Pratt, Davia Davis, Justin Rothshank & Union Project artists, Mary Lois Verrilla, Rogers-CAPA students;Natalie Blake, Courtney Moore & Julia Cahill, Diane DeNardo, Nikki Kalcevic, Stephanie Flow, Tim Stavenger, Mario Rossero, Barbara Kalin, Valda Cox, Denise McPherson, Maritza Mosquero, Emily Maleson, Howard Booth, Adam Shreckhise, Tom Vegandy, Charlotte Ambrass, Mara Linaberger, Madelyn Roehrig, Roger Laib. [Highland Park] Highland Park in the news; new Union Project stained glass class & film

Last week we read an article in the Post-Gazette about the community plan, including comments by Highland Park neighbors: <http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04026/265786.stm> This week we can read an article in the P-G about the state of the neighborhood written by one of our neighbors, Clarke Thomas: <http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04035/269029.stm> Also, the Union Project is included in a story in the Tribune-Review about the rehabilitation of old church buildings: <http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review/tribnorth/news/s_177740.html> The Union Project has had great interest and success in its stained glass restoration classes. They've just announced a third class starting March 6 and ending April 10. To register for the class, call 412-478-3105 or send email to <justin(a)unionproject.org>. The deadline for registration is February 25. These popular classes tend to fill up fast, so register early. Also, "Talitha Koum", a film shot at the Union Project by a former Union Project board member, premieres tomorrow at the Pittsburgh Mennonite Church on Murray Avenue in Greenfield. This film is loosely based on the Mark 5 Bible passage of the bleeding woman and the dying girl and takes a look at what it means to "be healed". In 2003, Highland Park helped Fulton Academy raise $80 through the Carnegie Cash for Schools program. The Carnegie Cash for Schools program is designed to promote membership in the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh.
