City of Pittsburgh Department of Parks & Recreation Department of Public Works Sunday July 27, 2003 Calling All Volunteers Come out and enjoy the sunshine, meet interesting people and encourage the riders to spin the pedals Assistance is needed with the Water/Rest Stops for this year's Great Ride. Volunteers will assist with set up of rest stop area; distribute water, sports drinks, fruit and other snack items. Also assist with breakdown and clean up of rest stop. Late Registration and Packet Pick Up - University of Pittsburgh Center for Biotechnology Technology Drive off Second Avenue at Bates Street (parking lot area) Time of volunteering 6:30am - 10:00am Time includes set up and clean up. [Highland Park] Kids apprehended after throwing apples and breaking windows on Sheridan Ave.

The following report comes from a neighbor on Sheridan Ave. -Rudy On Sunday, July 20, there was a marauding band of young nitwits throwing apples and breaking windows on the 900 block of Sheridan Ave. A 100-year-old leaded-glass window was broken by these boys. They made at least three trips up and down the street at various times of the day, all of them during broad daylight. Many of the porches on the block were littered with crab apples that had been gathered from the tree at the corner of Sheridan and Jackson. Other windows may have been broken on other blocks of Sheridan or on other streets. The police (with the invaluable help of two intrepid neighbors who must remain anonymous to protect their super-hero status) were able to catch the boys last night and their names and addresses are now known. If anyone had any windows broken by apples on Sunday, they should contact the police.

[Highland Park] Roving Art Cart comes to Highland Park

The mission of the Citiparks Roving Art Cart is to encourage every child to explore his or her artistic talents in a variety of multi-media settings. From a day at the circus to an underwater puppet show, the Roving Art Cart's interactive art experience will set the stage for imaginative fun: <http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/parks/html/roving_art_cart.html> The Art Cart will be at the Farmhouse on Friday from 10:30 to 12:30, visiting the children of the Highland Park Community Club summer day camp and any other children in the neighborhood who show up. It comes back to Highland Park on August 8--it will be at the Super Playground then. Rudy

(If you know of something else going on, please let me know!) August will get busy again with another Union Project clean-up day, the Reservoir of Jazz each Sunday, and the Community Celebration on Bryant Street marking the completion of the Highland Park Community Plan document. We should also see the beginning of the restoration of the fountain area at the main entrance to the park on North Highland Avenue. Rudy

[Highland Park] Kitten found at the Reservoir

A silver tabby kitten was found at the reservoir. Is it yours? If not, would you like to adopt it? The kitten was first seen on Thursday, when it had a collar that has since been lost. It is a friendly kitten, approximately 6 months old, and female. For those who participated in the most recent Town Meeting of the Highland Park Community Plan, thank you! We appreciate your enthusiasm and commitment to improving the community.
