Dear Highland Park Community, Education Innovations, Inc. would like to send all of you our best holiday wishes. We would like to remind you of the wonderful organizations that are working hard every day, making Highland Park a great neighborhood for you. I would like to encourage each of you to keep at least one of them in your giving list. Education Innovations, Inc. is working on education at the grassroots level, developing programs that have direct effects on the achievement of children. SchoolSynapse, which we will unveil in the new year will provide a magnet program of sorts in the out-of-school time. This network of after-school, week-end, and summer programs will give students the ability to choose a K-12 specialty around various topics such as Ecology, Architecture, Engineering, Health and Fitness, The Arts, Civics, Entrepreneurship, and Technology. And all this will be available to students in places that are familiar to them, their own neighborhood schools. Look for NatureLAB to sprout at Fulton Academy some time next year. The Union Project continues to champion the arts as a vital form of community development. The Community Club continues to be a forum for neighbors to stay connected to happenings in the community. The Highland Park Community Development Corporation continues to work toward a vibrant business community on Bryant Street, welcoming features at the portals into the park and community, and most important, an improved Mellon Street. Whether your interest is education, the arts, community development, or just a plain community support, there is an organization in Highland Park that would appreciate your support this year. [I'm sending this message on behalf of Heather Kropf, Administrative Director of the Mennonite Urban Corps-Pittsburgh...] Mennonite Urban Corps, a nonprofit located in Highland Park on Stanton Avenue, is hosting an open house on Wednesday, Dec. 10, for our neighborhood and program partners, 7-9 p.m. Briefly, some info about MennoCorps: We're a 10-year-old nonprofit that attracts college and university graduates to Pittsburgh. We offer participants vocational and leadership development opportunities through a year of service to a broad array of institutions, organizations, and businesses. This year our partners include: Rachel Carson Homestead, Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Mom's House/Angel's Place, Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation, Heinz History Center, 9 Mile Run Watershed Association, Mildred's Daughters Urban Farm, The Allegheny Front, United Steelworkers of America, and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Our program is competitive, accepting only 8 participants each year. They live communally in our Highland Park boarding house. In addition to placing them in uniquely appropriate worksites, we also provide a weekly educational seminar. Topics and activities range from Pittsburgh history, theology, racial & urban issues, conflict resolution, book discussions, field trips, cultural activities, and lectures. The goal is to create engaged, holistic and civic-minded urban citizens. About 1/3 of all alumni have chosen Pittsburgh as their new home (that's roughly 35 folks), and about 7-10 of those people have purchased homes in Highland Park, E. Liberty or Morningside. In addition, MennoCorps has attracted dozens and dozens of other college graduates to Pittsburgh (they often relocate to the East End). Alumni of this program formed the Union Project. In November, Doug Graham wrote that Fulton Academy and the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh are working together to promote the Arts and Science in Highland Park through a new fund-raising program called Carnegie Cash for Schools in which Carnegie Museums will give Fulton Academy $10 for each family membership and $5 for each individual membership purchased by Fulton friends and family. For the month of December only, the Carnegie Museums have doubled their contribution--they will donate $20 for each family membership and $10 for each individual membership! So please mention Fulton Academy when purchasing or renewing your Carnegie Museums membership. [Highland Park] Highland Park Community Plan Final Report ready for public comments

The Highland Park community planning process is close to completion. After town meetings, a community survey, a community celebration, a retreat and lots of writing, a complete draft of the final report is ready for public review. You can pick up the complete final report, or an executive summary, at Enrico's Tazza D'Oro or Sandy's Deli. You can also access the report on-line, at <http://communityconnections.heinz.cmu.edu/highlandpark/report.jsp> Here are some "highlights" of the final report which may spark your interest in the whole document: - Demographically, Highland Park much more closely resembles the city of Pittsburgh as a whole than it does its immediate neighbors, or Shadyside or Squirrel Hill; - Residents who responded to the community survey generally like Highland Park but have relatively few social ties within the community; - Strategies for improving the neighborhood focus as much on "human development"--youth recreation, collaborations with local public schools, and block-level neighborhood organizations--as "physical development', such as housing redevelopment or improvement of the Bryant Street commercial district. Your opinions, questions and concerns regarding the community plan, and the planning process in general, are very important. You can make yourself heard by filling out comment sheets at Tazza D'Oro or Sandy's Deli, or by posting to a discussion board dedicated to the final report at the Community Plan final report web page (click on "Discuss the Final Report"). We will incorporate community feedback into a revised version of the final report. This document will be presented to the Highland Park Community Club and Highland Park Community Development Corporation at their January 2004 meetings for consideration for adoption as the official planning strategy for the neighborhood.
