Tonight at the Highland Park Community Club Meeting we'll hear about the final draft of the Community Plan so board members can approve it in January. (Remember: there is no December meeting!) Education Innovations will collect used printer cartridges at the meeting as a part of a new fund-raising effort. The meeting is at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church at 5801 Hampton St at 7:30 pm. Dear Highland Park, Soon, Education Innovations, Inc., will be announcing its latest projects, SchoolSynapse and NatureLAB. While we won't give you the details right now, we can tell you that you will be proud to be living in the neighborhood. SchoolSynapse deals with how schools make smarter use of community resources. NatureLAB, a demonstration of SchoolSynapse, will be coming to Fulton Academy of Science next year. Come to the Community Club meeting this Thursday to get in on the details. Our fund-raising goal for SchoolSynapse and NatureLAB is $250,000. Lucky for you, we're not asking you for any of it. Right now. We would like your help raising these funds by donating your used printer cartridges. You can bring them with you to this Community Club meeting, or feel free to stop by The Learning Club in Highland Park at 5808 Bryant Street, Suite 2. We will have a kick-off celebration in January, complete with music, food, and other entertainment. But in the meantime, get in the habit of keeping your empty cartridges. [Highland Park] Thank you for REI letter

Neighbors, Friends, East-enders: Thank you so much for your letter showing your enthusiasm for REI and East Liberty! We received 214 letters by October 31, 2003 and immediately shared them with REI. Our intention in organizing this effort was to give the Eastenders and others who love R.E.I a chance to express opinions about store locations to REI. For the folks who organized this effort in hopes of getting a few dozen responses, it was incredibly rewarding. It demonstrates a keen interest in the Eastend as an authentic retailing destination. There is an Eastend family of outdoor enthusiasts who share the rivers, roads, paths and parks of our region and that also share a vision for the community in which they live, work, play and shop. While one of the things we all want is better retailing opportunities, your letters stated an unwavering optimism about the future of East Liberty and its surrounding neighborhoods. Late last week, REI shared their decision to locate at the Southside Works. Although we are disappointed to lose REI at the Eastside, please join us in letting REI know how glad we are that they are coming to Pittsburgh, and to wish them success at their proposed Southside Works location. REI's C.E.O. has written a letter to you about this decision and asked that I share it with you along with this update e-mail. REI indicated that the choice between the Eastside and the Southside Works was a difficult one. Each site offers different advantages to a retailer like REI. Your letters show an excitement about the Eastend, Whole Foods and the other emerging development projects. East Liberty Development Inc, the neighborhood-based community development corporation, and the private developers working in East Liberty have some very good ideas and leads for other retailers on the Eastend. We would like to hear more about your ideas about the kind of growth you want in the Eastend. If you have any ideas about specific tenants or uses that you see as opportunities, please send them our way. We will keep you informed of our process in building the Eastend. After a thoughtful and careful analysis of what would work best for all of our customers in the city, we decided to locate a store in Southside Works. This is an exciting mixed-use development that reclaims an old steel mill site and should contribute to the economy and quality of life in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is sometimes called the "City of Bridges." Our store site is several miles from the East Liberty neighborhood--a few minutes by bicycle. We will be part of East Liberty community and will be working hard to serve all of our customers, current members and new members, who live there. Relationships with people and groups in the communities where we have stores are very important to REI. This has been true since we were founded as a consumer cooperative in 1938. [Highland Park] Pittsburgh on Parade

Visual Artist Cheryl Capezzuti will conduct a series of two FREE community art workshops this Thursday, November 13 & Tuesday, November 18 at Dilworth Traditional Academy for the Arts and Humanities from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend! Nothing is required except your imagination and creative spirit. The community will work with Cheryl to build giant-sized creations for a parade that will take place at 8:00pm on New Year's Eve for this year's First Night events downtown. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your neighbors, create art with your family and just have some really great fun. If you have any fabric, paint, or anything in shades of blue that you wish to donate to the event, please feel free to bring in on Thursday. Hope to see you there! Any questions? [Highland Park] Highland Park Community Plan final report (executive summary) available!

After a long wait, the Highland Park Community Plan is moving toward completion! A revised executive summary is now available in hard copy at Enrico's Tazza d'Oro and Sandy's Deli, and on-line at: <http://www.highlandparkcommunity.com/> A complete final plan, including supporting documentation, will be available Wednesday, November 12. We want your comments, suggestions and complaints regarding the results of the community planning process. We have made a number of observations regarding the nature of Highland Park, and recommendations for improving the neighborhood that may not be the ones you might have made in our place. For example: - For some residents, Highland Park may resemble a "bedroom community" more than one where residents focus their social ties and daily activities, - Highland Park is more similar to the city of Pittsburgh than any of its neighboring communities or presumed "peer" communities in terms of demographic characteristics; - We should focus efforts on improving blighted housing through physical development in concert with community health and safety measures - We should organize a year-round Highland Park youth group. Do you agree or disagree? For more details, and to join the discussion regarding what we want to see our community become, pick up a copy of the final report.
