[Highland Park] craft materials needed for the Scarecrow Festival

Hi all, If anybody has any leftover craft materials they'd like to get rid of (especially in fall colors), I am looking for materials for the kids to use to decorate their goody bags for the Scarecrow Festival next Saturday. Paper, cloth, anything that is glueable with regular Elmer's and suitable for children would be fine. This way, we don't have to spend money or generate additional trash, and people can get rid of stuff they don't need cluttering up their space! Drop it off to me any time before Friday, Oct. 24. [Highland Park] Bulb Sale Update

Mellon Street Neighbors would like to thank the Highland Park community for their support toward the beautification efforts for our area. We raised $235, which will buy us lots of color and fragrance for next spring. Our planting will likely be blooming at just about the same time the Highland Park CDC properties are in the final stages of renovations! With your help, we can make the Southwest Quadrant of Highland Park just as beautiful, friendly, and livable as the rest of Highland Park! Thanks again! [Highland Park] Volunteers Still Needed for the 3rd Annual Scarecrow Festival

Hi everyone, I still am in (rather desperate at this point) need of volunteers for the Scarecrow Festival to be held Oct. 25 from 12-2 at the Farmhouse playground. Here are some of the things I need help with: - People to "man" the games (bean bag toss type things - help the kids and hand out prizes) Citiparks is providing - the more volunteers there are, the more games there can be. - Someone to judge the scarecrows (anybody know a local politician or somebody that might be interested?) - Someone to get donations for prizes for the scarecrow contest as well as the for the kids games. - People to help set up and clean up. [Highland Park] House Tour this Saturday

Highland Park's Fall house tour is this Saturday, October 18th, from 11-5. "Kitchens and Cookbooks" are being featured in many of the 12 homes on the tour this year. The Highland Park Community Development Corporation will also feature certain projects on the tour this year which will provide quite an interesting feature for the tour-goers. It appears that we will have a perfect autumn day to walk among the fall foliage on display throughout the neighborhood! Be sure to take this opportunity to tour the creative and spectacular homes on this year's tour and help the community at the same time! All proceeds benefit the Highland Park Community Club which continues to enrich our neighborhood after all these years! Tickets are available at St. Andrew's Church on Hampton Street on the day of the tour at a price of $15.00 or in advance by calling 412-665-3646 for a reduced price of $12.00. Local cookbooks will be for sale in various homes and the tour book will contain recipes from the homeowners. Dana

On Friday evening, October 17, beginning at 8 p.m., the annual St. Andrew's Lecture will feature as our speaker Pittsburgh civic and business leader Linda Dickerson speaking on "The Pittsburgh Renaissance: Past, Present, Future." The program is free. The featured St. Andrew's Artist at this event will be Patricia Stone, long-time Highland Park resident who is now completing graduate studies in California. Her work will be on display in the Parish Hall during the reception following the lecture. Bruce Robison

[Highland Park] October HPCC Meeting, Green Neighborhood Initiative

I hope to see you all Thursday at 7:30 at St. Andrews Church for October's Highland Park Community Club meeting! In addition to our regular meeting, the program this month will be Conservation Consultants Inc.'s Green Neighborhood Initiative: <http://www.ccicenter.org/programs/gns/residential.html> A representative from this non-profit organization will discuss how homeowners in the 15206 ZIP code can conserve energy and lower their utility bills. I tried it, and I recommend that everyone consider this program. I had a short phone interview to discuss the areas of my house that may need addressing. I was asked what rooms I use the most, whether they were drafty, how old my refrigerator was, and what lights I use the most. This was in preparation for the visit by Bobbi from the Green Neighborhood Initiative. On the day of my appointment, Bobbi arrived with a few tools and lots of information. Bobbi is a pleasant, low-key lady, who was very easy to talk to. She asked me questions about my house. She told me about some things I can do to make it more energy-efficient. She told me about other programs that were available to me. The one thing that I liked was that there is no income requirement for Bobbi to check out my house. None. Although some of the programs she discussed with me are income-based, she never asked what my income was. She showed me a list of the income guidelines and simply asked me if I was eligible. I was never asked to buy anything. I was never told that I need to replace my windows (which, if you know me, is something I never want to do). No pressure. What I got from this was weather strip around my front door, 2 fluorescent light bulbs (to use in the areas I spend the most time in), some spray foam to seal gaps around a window, a test of my refrigerator (it uses $14.45 per month in electricity), a check of the water level in my toilet tank, and a low-flow (high-performance) showerhead. Bobbi did not even balk when I told her she could put the new showerhead in, but she could not take my old one (I like the pressure I get from my showerhead and was not sure about the new one). To my surprise, the new showerhead is great. So I would definitely recommend you have Conservation Consultants Inc. do a survey of your house. Call them at 412-431-4449, and tell them Bob sent you. All Points Bulletin for Highland Park Super Volunteers and Handymen(and Women)! Your Neighborhood Needs You (and Your Toolbox) on Saturday, October 11th at 9:00 a.m. Tomorrow, Saturday, October 11th from 9:00 a.m. until early evening, your assistance is needed to help prepare community owned properties for display in the Highland Park House Tour. The Highland Park CDC, the non-profit, volunteer staffed organization responsible for the rehabilitation of 5635 Stanton Avenue and the ongoing restoration of nuisance properties throughout our neighborhood, is preparing homes on Mellon Street that are currently under reconstruction for display in the Highland Park House Tour. This year's tour is expected to draw thousands to Highland Park and we hope to display these homes to potential buyers and neighbors . . . but we need help! On Saturday, October 11th (yes, that is tomorrow) at 9:00 a.m. we will be meeting at 817 Mellon Street to "red up" properties that we all have a stake in. [Highland Park] 3rd Annual Scarecrow Festival

CREATE YOUR VERY OWN SCARECROW Everyone in the Highland Park community is invited to create a scarecrow between October 11th and October 25th and proudly display them in yards, apartment windows, balconies and other creative locations. The idea is to get as many scarecrows as we can along the streets of Highland Park. Prizes to be awarded in the following categories: - Funniest - Scariest - Best Dressed - Children's Category (8 and under) THE 3RD ANNUAL SCARECROW FESTIVAL On Saturday, October 25 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm, we will gather at the Farmhouse Playground at Grafton and Heberton Streets for food, fun, festivities, and the judging of the scarecrows.
