[Highland Park] Music 'til Midnight on Hallowe'en

On Friday October 31, organist (and Highland Park resident) Dr. Charles Huddleston Heaton will perform 'Music 'til Midnight' at Pittsburgh's St. Andrew's Episcopal Church (5801 Hampton Street in Highland Park, 412-661-1245). The recital will begin at 11pm on Hallowe'en, and the end of the program will mark Dr. Heaton's 75th birthday. As the organist/choir director at East Liberty Presbyterian Church from 1972 to 1993, Heaton performed over a dozen recitals following the 11pm-12am 'Music 'til Midnight' model. His recitals garnered something of a cult following, with numerous attendees recording the concerts. (Reports of tape trading are as of yet unsubstantiated). This recital marks his first 'Music 'til Midnight' since 1996. Heaton says he borrowed the idea from Calvin Hampton in New York City. "I never actually heard one of his," says Heaton, "but it seemed like a great idea for Pittsburgh. Initially I thought it would only draw younger people, but to everyone's astonishment, it drew a mix of young and old. Plus it gives me a chance to play pieces that wouldn't work on Sunday morning". In this case, some of those pieces include the Hallowe'en classic Danse Macabre by Saint-Saens, and a rousing rendition of Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries. Also included will be works by Widor, Sowerby and Lemare and Chicago composer, Morgan Simmons. The Oct 31 'Music 'til Midnight' is free to the public. A 'coffee house' at 10pm in the church hall will precede the concert. Heaton will take the console at 11pm, and play into his 75th year of staying up late. Matt Heaton

[Highland Park] REI may come to the East End; your input is needed

I just learned that outdoor/sporting goods retailer REI is considering opening a store in Pittsburgh and would choose either a location in the Southside or in East Liberty near Whole Foods for this new store. ELDI (East Liberty Development, Incorporated) has set up an email address to receive letters of support for opening the store in East Liberty: To: reilos(a)mindspring.com Cc: becky(a)friendship-pgh.org Please send your messages of support to *both* addresses and DO SO BY FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31 AT 11:00 am! (Sorry for the late notice, but I only found out about this today!) Local community groups such as ELDI, the HPCDC (Highland Park Community Development Corporation), and FDA (Friendship Development Association) support opening the new store in the East End, and are looking for your support in convincing the company to do so. Becky Mingo of FDA suggests sending a proper letter mentioning your interest in the store and preference for an East End location over one in the Southside. If you are arealdy a member of REI, mention that. If you shop at Whole Foods and think adding another successful business in East Liberty would be good for the whole East End would be good--mention that too! [Highland Park] Reflections of Childhood

Dilworth Traditional Academy for the Arts and Humanities will be holding an art auction in mid February 2004. Dilworth hopes to create a greater sense of community within the school, between the school and parents, as well as it's surrounding Communities. The monies raised will be used to help support the integration of the arts and environmental awareness into the curriculum. Our vision for this event is to keep it as environmentally friendly as we can. This is where we need your help: we want to use as many recycled objects as we can get our hands on. We are asking that if any of you have old mirrors, sturdy wooden boxes, old trunks, wooden picture frames, furniture etc., that you wish to donate to our artistic cause, please feel free to contact Tania Grubbs @ 412-xxx-xxxx. Also, if you are an artist or enjoy exploring your artistic side, and wish to create a piece for the auction, or perhaps donate a piece of your work that would be fantastic! The students at Dilworth Traditional Academy for the Arts and Humanities will be getting involved as well. They will be designing and making the decorations from recycled materials, gathering items for gift baskets, as well as exploring their process through reflective writing and integration into their daily studies. [Highland Park] Pittsburgh on Parade

On New Year's Eve, communities from all over Pittsburgh will gather downtown for First Night's Community Parade. Parade Coordinator Cheryl Capezzuti will conduct ten *free* neighborhood workshops around the city to prepare for the big event! Participants are invited to come and make their own parade-sized creations to represent their neighborhood and then plan to march in the parade themselves. Workshop participants can be children and families as well as local artists and interested community members. The Highland Park Community has been invited to participate in this series of free workshops with renowned visual artist Cheryl Capezzuti. Cheryl will meet interested participants on Tuesdays, November 4, 11, and 15 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Dilworth Traditional Academy for the Arts and Humanities. The theme for our parade-sized creations will be *water* so bring anything that you wish to contribute: fabric, paints, papers etc.--anything you wish to contribute in shades of blue. Everyone is welcome. The parade will take place at 8:00pm on New Year's Eve in downtown Pittsburgh as part of a larger New Year's Eve event. First Night Pittsburgh is a community and family-oriented, alcohol-free celebration of the New Year through the arts. Beginning at 5:00 pm and ending with the Grand Finale and Zambelli fireworks at midnight, New Year's Eve in downtown Pittsburgh is filled with dance, music, song, mime, story-telling, theater, poetry, film, video and multi-media presentations. Cheryl Capezzuti is a Pittsburgh-based visual artist and puppet maker whose work has appeared at the Carnegie Museum of Art, The Black Sheep Puppet Festival, The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and many community venues. Her most widely recognized public art project, The National Lint Project, has included over a thousand participants in the past ten years.
